Whistleblowing and Enforcement
Ready to Burn is a fuel quality scheme administered by Woodsure on behalf of Defra. There are currently over 1000 businesses complying with the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 that prohibits the sale of the most polluting fuels: wet wood and house coal.
Local authorities are responsible for the enforcement of those who continue trading without joining the Ready to Burn scheme. Woodsure engages with all stakeholders to communicate how we can provide support and correct any misinformation.
We are uniquely positioned in the industry, allowing us to provide first-hand assistance and act as a channel for direct reporting. Whilst local authorities deliver enforcement, Woodsure has a Primary Authority partnership with Trading Standards, enabling us to provide evidence, witness statements, and ongoing support regarding enforcement action. We have seen a rise in reports to local authorities over the last year, with actions taken in many of these cases. Potential penalties range from fines (per incident) to direct court action.
Woodsure is committed to raising industry standards and we will continue to encourage others to follow. As part of this commitment, we encourage individuals to contact us if fuel suppliers are not adhering to the legislation. Every case we receive is followed up internally and dealt with in the strictest confidence. Where possible, please provide us with screenshots, photographs, or links to allow us to compile evidence. The more information you can provide us with, the more we can pass on to Trading Standards.
We understand concerns within the industry regarding enforcement and want to assure certified suppliers that we take reports of non-compliant businesses very seriously. We take the proactive approach of informing them of the legislation, getting them certified, and reporting them to Trading Standards if necessary.
If you want to make us aware of a fuel supplier not adhering to the legislation or if you have any questions regarding Woodsure’s role in enforcement, please contact us by calling 01684 278188 or emailing [email protected].
